hg ci -i and interface = curses: does not work always

Hi 

Recently I use hg ci -i quite a bit.

I have set and in most repositories I see then something like this

elect hunks to record - [x]=selected **=collapsed  c: confirm  q: abort  arrow keys: move/expand/collapse  space/enter: deselect
?: help
[x]**  .evc
[x]**  manuscript.tex
[x]**  proof-outline/outline-of-the-proof.tex
[x]**  section3-fourier.tex
[x]**  section4-sh.tex

Which is precisely what I want.

However in one particular repository I only see
starting interactive selection
this diff is too large to be displayed
falling back to text mode
diff --git a/.abbrev_defs b/.abbrev_defs
16 hunks, 16 lines changed
examine changes to '.abbrev_defs'?
(enter ? for help) [Ynesfdaq?]      

I am confused about the diff message, since in the first case also no
diff is displayed, but I presume I could if I want. In any case:

Anything I could do?
