Cloning to a downgraded repository - examples don't seem to work

OK, thanks for the explanation, it's clearer now.

Yes, it's not a big repositary anyway so the space saving is pretty
much irrelevant. I did wonder if I'd lost some content but not as far
as I can tell, all the history etc. is still there.
