Cloning to a downgraded repository - examples don't seem to work

Debian Bullseye has mercurial 5.6.1.  I'm running Debian Bullseye on a
Beaglebone Black single board computer.  It will get upgraded to
Debian Bookworm soon though.  It's in France, on a boat, and I don't
dare upgrade it remotely via ssh, so the upgrade will have to wait
until I next visit the boat which will be in a couple of weeks time.
