hg 6.7.2 and hg-git, that pushed topics as git branches

Hi
I already sent a «bug» report to the hg-git list, but Dan is usually
very busy and the traffic on the that list is rather low. However, I
know that her on this list there are also users of hg-git, and maybe
somebody can give me advice.
I am maintaining emacs-matlab, and contributing to emacs auctex, both
using git, and since git is beyond me, I used in the past
hg 5.2 and changeset 6942fb0a8c9d, by Manuel Jacob, that allowed me
either to push hg branches or hg topics as git branches. It worked
beautifully for me.
Now I had to upgrade to Ubuntu 24 that ships hg 6.7.2, now hg-git also
provided changeset 4b51ff13e8f5 that is Dan's implementation of a similar
feature. However when I used it, hg refused to push because
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
searching for changes
abort: no bookmarks or tags to push to git
(see "hg help bookmarks" for details on creating them)
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Which means topics or branches are not supported.
1. I cannot compile hg 5.2, most likely the python version shipped
does not allow it.
2. So I tried to use hg-git changeset 6942fb0a8c9d
However in that case I receive
failed to import extension "hggit" from /home/oub/ALLES/src/hg-git-manuel/hggit: attribute name must be string, not 'bytes'
That sounds like a python syntax problem.
Anybody can give me a hint how to deal with that?
Thanks and regards
Uwe Brauer
