Am I understanding this correctly?   Freshly installed Ubuntu 24.04 pro-
vides Mercurial 6.7.3?   This version  as well as  6.7.2 and  6.7.1 have
been withdrawn due to a severe bug (but one which rarely surfaces).  You
should upgrade  to at least  version 6.7.4  (check the Mercurial mailing
list for a mail from <raphael.gomes at octobus.net> dated 2024-06-12).

I would file a bug against Ubuntu providing a withdrawn package version.
